Scientists agree: Experiences make people happy, NOT things!

The pursuit of happiness might well be our ultimate goal in life. After all, we, humans, don’t want to just survive, we want to live – and live happily!

So, what is it that makes people truly happy? How can we achieve our ultimate goal and purpose in life?

Let’s be honest here, material possessions can make people feel pretty good! Buying yourself an amazing and expensive pair of shoes makes you feel confident; getting the newest iPhone for your birthday truly is exciting, and the look on children's faces when they open their Christmas presents  is heartwarming. Things makes us feel special, loved, comfortable and happy…or so we thought.

Does shopping make us happy?

Recent studies have shown that experiences are the key to everlasting happiness, NOT material goods.

The Daily Mail published an article mentioning a study carried out by Dr. Thomas Gilovich from Cornell University, which concluded that, although material things may grant us instant satisfaction, their initial appeal quickly fades away as we get accustomed to them and take them for granted. On the other hand, experiences make people happier in the long run because they create memories that last forever.

Dr. Gilovich goes even further stating that even bad experiences can make people happier than possessions, since they can be turned into funny stories, valuable life lessons – and overall happy memories.

CNN has also published an article stating that, unlike material possessions, experiences “ continue to provide happiness through memories long after the event occurred.”, this time backed by another study by Ryan Howell, assistant professor of psychology at San Francisco State University.

The 154 participants found that, in the long run, experiences made them happy than possessions, and one of the main reasons why was because experiences bring people together,  creating bonds and memories than can be shared.

Concerts, parties, trips to the theatre, lessons, workshops, tasting sessions, holidays…. all these experiences make you and everyone around you more connected and happier.

And if you’re looking for a special gift for your child or a child you know, why not offer them the opportunity to meet their favourite princess? What if YOU could have the opportunity to meet someone you admire and love, imagine that? At Ever After we want to give children that opportunity and make their dreams come true.

Remember, choose experiences…. and live happily Ever After :)
